Work-related upper limb musculoskeletal disorders in paediatric laparoscopic surgery. A multicenter survey.

2013

Abstract Background Surgeons are at risk for developing work-related musculoskeletal symptoms (WMS). The present study aims to examine the physical factors and their association with WMS among pediatric laparoscopic surgeons. Methods A questionnaire consisting of 21 questions was created and mailed to 25 pediatric laparoscopic surgeons (LG). 23/25 surgeons (92%) completed the survey. The questionnaire was analyzed and then split into 2 groups. Group 1 (LG1) included surgeons with greater laparoscopic experience, and group 2 (LG2) included surgeons with less important laparoscopic experience. In addition, we constructed and sent to the same surgeons a similar questionnaire focused on WMS aft…

Bipedicled DIEAP flaps for reconstruction of limb soft tissue defects in male patients.

2016

Summary Background Extensive soft tissue deficiencies involving the limbs can be difficult to reconstruct and may require more than one microsurgical flap transfer to cover the defect. This can be particularly challenging in male patients, where the sacrifice of a donor muscle could result in considerable comorbidity. This paper describes the use of the bipedicled deep inferior epigastric artery perforator (DIEAP) flap to perform a one-stage reconstruction of extensive soft tissue defects in male patients. Methods By using preoperative multidetector computed tomographic (MDCT) angiography, the dominant perforators of the abdominal wall were identified and the bipedicled DIEAP flap was used …

The incidence of hip, forearm, humeral, ankle, and vertebral fragility fractures in Italy: results from a 3-year multicenter study

2010

Introduction: We aimed to assess the incidence and hospitalization rate of hip and "minor" fragility fractures in the Italian population. Methods: We carried out a 3-year survey at 10 major Italian emergency departments to evaluate the hospitalization rate of hip, forearm, humeral, ankle, and vertebral fragility fractures in people 45 years or older between 2004 and 2006, both men and women. These data were compared with those recorded in the national hospitalizations database (SDO) to assess the overall incidence of fragility fractures occurring at hip and other sites, including also those events not resulting in hospital admissions. Results: We observed 29,017 fractures across 3 years, with…

Volar and dorsal mid-shaft forearm plating using DCP and LC-DCP: interference with the interosseous membrane and forearm-kinematics.

2010

Purpose To clarify if dorsal plate osteosynthesis of the forearm shaft is associated with impingement of the interosseous membrane (IOM) and if rotational kinematics of the forearm are influenced. Background Forearm fractures are treated by separate incisions. Osteosynthesis via one approach in proximal forearm fractures was associated with higher rates of synostosis. It has been claimed that this is due to IOM impingement. Materials and methods 16 forearms of fresh frozen cadavers were dissected until only radius, ulna and the IOM remained. To preserve physiological forearm rotation, the elbow joint, the distal radio-ulnar joint and the carpus remained intact. In group 1, LC-DC and DC plat…
